Dr. Bill James Releford Featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) April 03, 2012

Dr. Bill James Releford, founder of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program, was recently featured on NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams. Dr. Releford discusses the health issues of African American men and how he uses local barbershops around the country to help alleviate the impact of health disparities.

About Dr. Bill J. Releford

Dr. Bill J. Releford, a podiatric surgeon based in Los Angeles, is a graduate of the Temple School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. He began his practice in 1990 and established the Diabetic Foot Institute. As a podiatric surgeon based in Los Angeles, Dr. Releford specializes in diabetic limb salvage to help reduce the extraordinary high number of diabetes-related amputations experienced by African Americans. The astronomical amputation rate in the African American community inspired Dr. Releford to dedicate his life to developing innovative medical as well as advocacy strategies to increase health awareness and decrease diabetes and the amputation rate in underserved communities.

Dr. Bill J. Releford, launched two innovative initiatives to address health disparities in the African American community. The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program was launched October of 2007 out of the need to address health care disparities among African American men with the mission to screen, educate and refer men to local health care resources. Additionally, Dr. Releford authored the book The 5 Colors a Day to Better Health in February 2009 to address the lack of awareness about healthy food choices and the consequences of developing diabetes and other chronic diseases. The 5 Colors a Day to Better Health introduces a simple way for people of all ages to choose better foods to promote better health. The book is the foundation of Dr. Releford’s national campaign to fight diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. To help people achieve their health goals and objectives, a fitness component and a cooking device have been developed that will allow busy people the opportunity to prepare healthy meals for their families.

Dr. Releford and his efforts have recently been highlighted in the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek Magazine, The View, The Doctors, The Today Show and more. Additionally, Dr. Releford’s innovative community organizing strategies culminated into an invitation from President Obama to attend last year’s White House Super Bowl Party.

About The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program

The mission of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program is to empower African American men to better understand diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension and how to prevent its development and complications. In addition, Dr. Releford discusses proper food choices and exercise as a necessary component to prevention. The program is the brainchild of Dr. Releford, as he became increasing frustrated with how hard it was to reach many African American men when it came to preventative health care measures. Dr. Releford decided that he would take health care to his brothers and get them to get screened in a setting that they felt comfortable in the Barbershop.

Since its inception, the program has screened over 30,000 men in 26 cities in over 475 black owned barbershops. The BBHOP’s goal for 2012 is to screen over 25,000 men in 50 cities in over 750 barbershops. Ultimately, the goal is to screen over 500k men by the year 2014 and help address the disproportionate number of African American men with undetected cardiovascular disease.

How can you tell if you are ACTUALLY experiencing pregnancy symptoms?

Question by diamondgirl8216: How can you tell if you are ACTUALLY experiencing pregnancy symptoms?
as oppossed to ‘wishful thinking’ or whatever. For instance, girls get on here to list their symptoms of possible pregnancy, and many of them say that they are craving foods after just like 2 weeks of supposed pregnancy. My question is how can you know that you are actually craving foods, unless you are never hungry otherwise or something? I realize that everyone has different symptoms, but that also makes me think, how can you know that you are not just more aware of these supposed ‘symptoms’ because you already think that you may be expecting?

Best answer:

Answer by Kat
I don’t know. I never craved foods when I was pregnant. Or at least, I never craved foods that I wouldn’t normally crave.

No pickle/ice cream combo for me, but I did like my sugar. Always have.

I think the majority is wishful thinking. They have read somewhere that it is a sign of pregnancy, but didn’t read enough to know that normally it only comes 5-6 along the pregnancy route. If even that early.

Stomach problems (full feeling) Hiatal Hernia, Gallbladder, etc….?

Question by joyfulgirl1968: Stomach problems (full feeling) Hiatal Hernia, Gallbladder, etc….?
I’ve been having stomach problems for the past several years. The main symptoms are feeling full quickly while eating, and/or a feeling of fullness that doesn’t seem to go away (it usually starts a couple of hours after I eat if I don’t get the feeling while eating), feeling like I have a rock in my stomach, pain/discomfort where my rib cage comes together, burping a lot, especially right after eating, sometimes a feeling of gnawing in my stomach like something is in there, scratching around (I know, strange, but that’s what it feels like).
Every once in a while I get some acid/acid reflux, but not very often. I’ve already gotten an endoscopy to see if I have an ulcer and it came back negative.
Is this a Hiatal Hernia? A problem with my gallbladder?
Anyone out there that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Answer by The mom
The endoscopy would have shown a hiatal hernia, most likely. You need to keep an eye on what you eat, how much, and how that relates to the problem. To start with, scale back the fat in the diet to the minimum, and see if that helps. Then start adding fat back into the diet, and see if things change. If your problems are gallbladder related, you would notice a relationship between a high fat meal and your symptoms. Your symptoms aren’t really clear cut for any particular GI problem, so it’s hard to say what is going on. Gallbladder pain in a woman is usually more felt in the right shoulder blade area, sometimes just under the right rib cage. It’s also usual to have some pretty nasty gas and diarrhea from the undigested fats. Once you have a record of symptoms and lifestyle/diet, you should probably go back with that info and see a gastroenterologist. Then you’d be more likely able to nail down the source of the problem.

Sanford USD Medical Center Recognized for Heart Care

Sioux Falls, SD (PRWEB) February 07, 2012

Sanford USD Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology Foundations NCDR ACTION RegistryGWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2011 one of only 94 hospitals nationwide to do so. The award recognizes Sanford USD Centers commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients, and signifies that Sanford has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the ACTION RegistryGWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award, Sanford USD Medical Center consistently followed the treatment guidelines in ACTION RegistryGWTG for 4 consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 85 percent for specific performance measures. Following these treatment guidelines improves adherence to ACC/AHA Clinical Guideline recommendations, monitors drug safety and the overall quality of care provided to ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non- ST- elevation myocardial infarction patients (NSTEMI).

The American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association commend Sanford USD Medical Center for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols. The full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients, Gregg C. Fonarow, MD, FACC, FAHA, ACTION Registry-GWTG Steering Committee Chair and Director of Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center and James Jollis, MD, FACC, ACTION Registry-GWTG Co-Chair and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Duke University Hospital.

The time is right for Sanford USD Medical Center to be focused on improving the quality of cardiovascular care by implementing ACTION RegistryGWTG. The number of acute myocardial infarction patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing incidence of heart disease and a large aging population, said Charles OBrien, MD, president, Sanford USD Medical Center.

ACTION RegistryGWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society of Chest Pain Centers and the Society of Hospital Medicine. ACTION Registry-GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk STEMI and NSTEMI patients.

How do people with agoraphobia deal with everyday life and survive?

Question by just julie: How do people with agoraphobia deal with everyday life and survive?
Do they work or go out ever?

Best answer:

Answer by Jason
I’ve ran across two people who supposedly had this and I personally feel it is a made up fear. Both of them, one of them young and their parents made it up for them, functioned fine and only used it to collect welfare and I believe anyone else who says they have it is probably doing the same thing. They just don’t want to deal with the realities of life and are seeking a free ride. Having a fear of water is a legitmate fear, but fear of people/crowds? Give me a break. Instead of giving them money for their supposed problem, I say they push them out into life and tell them, there are over 6 billion and counting people living with you, deal with it.

Has anyone had a hiatal hernia? If so could you please answer a few questions?

Question by rhodecol: Has anyone had a hiatal hernia? If so could you please answer a few questions?
I was wonder how severe your symptoms got and if you needed surgery to correct the problem.

I have had right sided stomach pain that has gotten progressively worse over the last two years. Now I even have shortness of breath to go along with the chest pains, heartburn and the belly pain that sometimes shoots right through to my back.

I have had all sorts of tests done; CT scan, hida scan, endoscopy, upper GI, ultra sound, stress test, cardiac catherazation, and I’m sure I am still forgetting a few.

So far all that has been found is a kidney that is not working, an enlarged kidney, (both of which the dr. thinks came from all the urine infections I had as a child), an enlarged liver, severe acid reflux and a hiatal hernia.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Dio, do you do that sitting up or lying down? And it is for sure on your left side and not the right? Or would it be on both sides at the same time?

I’m willing to try anything at the moment.

Thanks.
Jo, I have been taking Nexium and Reglan (metoclopram) for months now and my belly still seems to have gotten worse, I also was told to take Gaviscon and I tend to drink that like water when the pain is really bad.

I do not drink any caffine and only smoke once in a while.

I have been sleeping at an angle for a long time now. In fact, I now sleep by myself on an inflateble bed in the living room since my husband doesn’t like laying on the angle I jack my bed to.

Thanks.

Oh wow you sounds like you’ve been through a lot! On occasion, my stomach sticks up through the floor of my diaphragm and I have heartburn, back and chest pain from it. My chiropractor showed me how to pull it back down. I just dig my fingers in under my ribs on the left side, so they are sitting on top of my stomach, then I cough hard and push down hard at the same time. It always works. I do it standing up, and yes just on the left because that is where you stomach is located in your body. It is uncomfortable to do to yourself -but if you gotta, you gotta- , you can also get someone else to do it for you while you lie on your back.
